Interior railings/Sherwood Park, Alberta
Interior railings in Sherwood Park.
Sherwood Park is full of homes from the era that loved a half wall. If yours has one closing in the stairs, opening it into a spindle railing is the single change that makes the whole level feel bigger.
Sherwood Park homes
What are the homes in Sherwood Park like?
Sherwood Park did most of its growing through the 1960s, 70s and 80s. Broadmoor, Westboro and Sherwood Heights built out earliest and hold the deepest bungalow inventory in the community, Maplewood went up largely through the 1970s and Heritage Point is mostly single-family homes from the 1980s and 90s.
That matters more than it sounds. Those decades built bungalows, bi-levels and four-level splits, and all three put a staircase right in the middle of the main living space. The way that staircase is separated from the room is usually the oldest-looking thing in an otherwise updated house.

The usual job
What railing work do Sherwood Park homes usually need?
The recurring one is the half wall, sometimes called a pony wall or a stub wall. Builders in that era closed the open side of a staircase with a short drywalled wall instead of a railing. It's solid, it blocks light and it makes a living room feel like two smaller rooms.
Taking that wall down to the floor and replacing it with a spindle railing is the change people notice immediately, and it's priced by the lineal foot like any other railing. That's exactly the one-day railing reno, and it's the job this community asks for most.
The other common one is original wood spindles. A four-level split from 1978 often still has the turned oak spindles it came with. Swapping them for metal spindles while keeping the newel posts and handrail is a smaller job than a full rebuild and changes the look completely.
Getting to you
Built in the shop, fitted in your home.
Sherwood Park sits just east of Edmonton across the Henday, so it's a short run for Ben and a standard part of his week.
About 70% of the work, all the drilling, cutting, staining and finishing, is done offsite in Ben's shop, so your home stays clean and he's on site for a fraction of the time. That's the same process wherever the job is. Ben measures your run, builds and finishes the railing offsite, then comes back and fits it, so the disruptive part of the work stays short no matter which side of the city you are on.
Every railing goes in to the National Building Code, 2023 Alberta Edition, and the workmanship is backed by a lifetime workmanship warranty.

We really liked the end result of Ben's work. It was nice that he crafted the materials in his shop, thus limiting the time spent in our home. Easy to work with and his suggestions were good!
Sherwood Park questions
What people here ask first.
Do you remove the half wall on the stairs, or just build the railing?
Both. Removing the stub wall is its own line on the estimate, priced by the lineal foot, and the new railing is priced separately. You can see the two split out when you send your measurements through the contact page, so you know what the wall removal is actually costing you before you commit.
Can you match a new railing to a four-level split layout?
Yes, and splits are a layout Ben knows well. A four-level runs a short flight up and a short flight down from the entry, which means the railing has to turn corners and meet landings cleanly. Ben measures the whole run, including the turns, and builds the posts and handrail as one system so the joints line up.
How long are you actually in my house?
Not long. About 70% of the work happens in Ben's shop. He measures, takes the old railing out and puts a temporary one up, then builds and finishes the new railing offsite before coming back to fit it. Most railing replacements install in a day, maybe two on a larger split.
