Interior railings/Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta

Interior railings in Fort Saskatchewan.

Fort Saskatchewan splits neatly in two: the 1970s and 80s streets where the railing is original, and the newer executive builds where the railing is a feature. Both are railing jobs, but they are not the same job.

Fort Saskatchewan homes

What are the homes in Fort Saskatchewan like?

PineviewSouthfortSherridon Heights

Pineview was built from 1970 through to the mid 1990s, on the wide lots and straightforward construction of that era, and it has the mature trees to show for it. From the 1990s onward the city expanded south with Southfort and Sherridon Heights, bringing bungalows, bi-levels and two-storeys on larger suburban lots.

Southfort is the bigger of the newer areas, split into Estates, Meadows and Ridge by home and lot size. Sherridon Heights is the city's executive address, with larger lots, custom builds and premium finishes.

The usual job

What railing work do Fort Saskatchewan homes usually need?

In Pineview it's the same retrofit as the other older communities: original spindles, a half wall closing in the stairs, or a handrail that no longer meets current code. Those are replacement jobs, and the one-day railing reno covers the common version.

In Sherridon Heights it's closer to the opposite problem. The house is already finished to a high standard, so the railing has to hold its own against it. That usually means a full system built as a unit, with the handrail profile, posts and caps chosen together and stained to match existing millwork.

Both start the same way: Ben measures the run, and the estimate is built by the lineal foot from what's actually there.

Getting to you

Built in the shop, fitted in your home.

Fort Saskatchewan is northeast of Edmonton along Highway 21, and it's part of Ben's regular service area.

About 70% of the work, all the drilling, cutting, staining and finishing, is done offsite in Ben's shop, so your home stays clean and he's on site for a fraction of the time. That's the same process wherever the job is. Ben measures your run, builds and finishes the railing offsite, then comes back and fits it, so the disruptive part of the work stays short no matter which side of the city you are on.

Every railing goes in to the National Building Code, 2023 Alberta Edition, and the workmanship is backed by a lifetime workmanship warranty.

We really liked the end result of Ben's work. It was nice that he crafted the materials in his shop, thus limiting the time spent in our home. Easy to work with and his suggestions were good!

Fort Saskatchewan questions

What people here ask first.

Is a premium railing priced differently from a standard one?

Yes. The emailed estimate prices a standard railing system so the number comes back fast, and upgrades to the rail, posts or spindles cost more on top of it. Ben confirms those upgrade costs on the final quote once you've picked the actual pieces, so the instant figure is a budgeting guide rather than the last word.

My handrail feels too thick to hold properly. Is that a code issue?

It can be. Current code requires a graspable handrail, meaning a profile your hand can actually close around, running continuously along the flight. A lot of older handrails are a flat wide board that holds you up but is not graspable. Ben will tell you at the measure whether yours meets current requirements.

Can you build a railing that matches millwork already in the house?

That's the normal way Ben works. Everything is stained and finished in his shop before it arrives, so the handrail, posts and caps can be matched to existing trim, cabinetry or flooring rather than finished on site and hoped for. Bring him a sample, or he'll take one at the consultation.
