Interior railings/Spruce Grove, Alberta

Interior railings in Spruce Grove.

Spruce Grove is a new-build town, and new builds come with the railing the builder chose, not the one you would have. That's the most common reason people here call.

Spruce Grove homes

What are the homes in Spruce Grove like?

GreenburyHarvest RidgeCopperhavenMcLaughlin Heights

Spruce Grove grew faster than almost anywhere in the region through the 2000s. Population growth ran at about 4.1% a year from 2001 to 2006 and accelerated to roughly 6% a year from 2006 to 2011, reaching 37,645 people by the 2021 census.

That growth arrived as master-planned communities: Greenbury, Harvest Ridge, Copperhaven and McLaughlin Heights, several of which are still building today. So the housing stock skews young, and the stairs in it are almost all builder-installed rather than original-old.

The usual job

What railing work do Spruce Grove homes usually need?

Upgrades rather than repairs. A ten-year-old home doesn't have a failing railing, it has a fine one that looks like every other railing on the street, because the builder fitted the standard package across the whole subdivision.

The usual change is swapping plain builder spindles for metal spindles in satin black, pewter or chrome, often keeping the existing handrail line. It's a visible change for a contained scope, and it's what makes a production home stop reading as a production home.

The other one is the handrail the builder left out. A finished basement stairwell or a back stair often has bare wall where a wall-mounted handrail should be. That's its own item, priced by the lineal foot, and it can go in on its own without touching the main railing.

Getting to you

Built in the shop, fitted in your home.

Spruce Grove is west of Edmonton along the Yellowhead, and it's a standard stop in Ben's service area.

About 70% of the work, all the drilling, cutting, staining and finishing, is done offsite in Ben's shop, so your home stays clean and he's on site for a fraction of the time. That's the same process wherever the job is. Ben measures your run, builds and finishes the railing offsite, then comes back and fits it, so the disruptive part of the work stays short no matter which side of the city you are on.

Every railing goes in to the National Building Code, 2023 Alberta Edition, and the workmanship is backed by a lifetime workmanship warranty.

We really liked the end result of Ben's work. It was nice that he crafted the materials in his shop, thus limiting the time spent in our home. Easy to work with and his suggestions were good!

Spruce Grove questions

What people here ask first.

Can you change the spindles without replacing the whole railing?

Often yes. If the newel posts and handrail are solid and sit at the right height, the spindles can be taken out and replaced on their own. That's a common scope in newer homes, because nothing is worn out, it's just the look you want changed. Ben confirms at the measure whether your railing takes that approach.

Will a new railing match the finishes already in my house?

That's the point of finishing offsite. Ben stains and finishes in his shop, so the handrail and posts can be matched to your existing floors, cabinets or trim before anything arrives at your door. Stain is a separate optional line on the estimate, so you can also take the railing unfinished if you have a painter lined up.

Is my home too new for this to be worth doing?

No. A railing upgrade is one of the few interior changes in a newer home that needs no demolition and no drywall repair. The old railing comes out, the new one goes in, and the scope stays inside a day for most homes of this size.
